There are two types of degrees to become a physician: an MD (allopathic) and a DO (osteopathic) degree. DOs are taught the same material in medical school as MDs, but DO’s emphasis is on holistic care. That is why they are required to complete a year of osteopathic internship before starting their residency training. Also they are taught osteopathic manipulative techniques to diagnose and treat patients. This additional training allows DOs to understand how the musculoskeletal system influences function and physiology. Dr. John Im is a DO.
